BibleTalk with Jeff Asher
BibleTalk with Jeff Asher began in 1988 as a call-in radio broadcast which aired for ten years on KGNC in Amarillo, TX. Later it moved to the internet as a website for articles, class materials, sermon outlines and debates to be downloaded for use all over the world. Now, BibleTalk is still growing and changing, being a podcast for audio and, eventually, video Bible study resources.

In order to know what a parable means, it is important to consider the context and situational setting. The parable before us is often considered with no regard to the setting in which it was presented. As with any text, this is a grave mistake. The principle learned is rather simple, but it is profound when the context is considered.

The Bible can be divided into 15 periods of Bible History. Recognizing these divisions is helpful for organizing the Bible chronologically in the mind and relating the various books to one another. The sixth of these 15 Periods is called the Period of the Conquest of Canaan. This period extends from the crossing of the Jordan River to the death of Joshua (Joshua 1:1-24:33). [This lesson covers Rahab and the Spies and the Conquest of Jericho.]

We should not be surprised to find parables throughout the teaching of Jesus. Some are long and narrative, some are short and pithy, like proverbs, others are brief and to the point, easily understood. The parable form is prevalent in the Sermon on the Mount. In His concluding remarks Jesus likens those to whom he has spoken as being of one of two classes, either a wise or a foolish builder.

It is often said the Church of Christ is "different" by which is meant that it is odd or out of step with what is generally accepted by the majority. However, Jesus said that His church would be different, and that His people are to be unique. The term "different" should not be used as a pejoritve to prejudice minds. Yes, the church of Christ is different, but why is the Church of Christ different? Jeff Asher leads a series of studies to explore just that question.

One of Jesus' parables often overlooked is actually the climax of the whole series in Matthew 13. Jesus has been contrasting the "good ground" with all the others which bring no fruit to perfection. That "honest and good heart" in this parable is described as "a scribe instructed unto the Kingdom of Heaven."

The parables Jesus spoke involved images from everyday things with which the Twelve were familiar. Most of the them were fisherman and many if not all had seen, and perhaps handled a dragnet. Jesus conveys a great spiritual reality to His disciples when He says, "They gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away."
