BibleTalk with Jeff Asher began in 1988 as a call-in radio broadcast which aired for ten years on KGNC in Amarillo, TX. Later it moved to the internet as a website for articles, class materials, sermon outlines and debates to be downloaded for use all over the world. Now, BibleTalk is still growing and changing, being a podcast for audio and, eventually, video Bible study resources.

Jeff Asher discusses the historical background for the book of Zephaniah. The book was written during the reign of King Josiah. Most likely, during the first few years of his reign as Josiah was preparing himself for the great task of restoration in Israel (2 Kings 22-23; 2 Chronicles 34-35). It was a wicked time, but a great time of religious zeal for the remnant in Judah.

The prophets publishes a psalm for Israel to sing in during the ensuing judgment. The God that brought Israel up from Egypt and dispersed the nations before them, the God of their salvation whose goodness they have received, but now spurned to their shame, will bring the nations against them. Judah must wait on God and endure their chasenting knowing that in His wrath He remembers mercy.

God answers the prophet. Once Judah has been chastened God will turn in judgment upon wicked Babylon. He will not allow them to make a full end of Judah as a nation, a remnant will return and fulfill God's purpose. God speaks great words of assurance: "The just shall life by his faith...the Lord is in HIs holy Temple, let all the world keep silence."

Habakkuk does not understand how God can use a nation more wicked than Judah as an instrument of His just judgment. The prophet is conserned that Babylon will utterly destroy the nation; this threat unsettles the prophet's hope and stirs doubt. But, Habakkuk purposes to wait patiently for God's answer.
